UPDATE: Chesterfield Police have charged Robert Murphy with three counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, three coutns of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and one count of brandishing a firearm in relation to Sunday's incident.

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC)—52-year-old Robert Murphy is in the hospital after police officers shot him multiple times outside his home on Sunday night.

Around 10 p.m. on Feb. 9, Chesterfield County Police officers responded to the 400 block of Pocono Drive for a report of a domestic disturbance between a husband and wife. Following an argument, the man had threatened and brandished a pistol at the woman, who fled to a neighbor's house for help. The neighbor called 911.

When police arrived at the scene, Murphy emerged from the residence, aiming his pistol at the officers, who asked him to drop the weapon. When the suspect refused, officers shot him multiple times. He was taken to VCU Medical Center by ambulance.

"We heard shots come down from the road, maybe three or four, maybe five shots," said neighbor Jason Dash. "The next thing you know police were everywhere ... the sirens were going, the ambulances ... the fire department came. I was shocked, I know the family across the street had some trouble before and police have been to their house but I didn't think anything like this would have happened."

After looking through court records, this is not the first time Murphy has been in trouble with the law for his use of a gun.

According to a summons, Murphy was charged with firing a gun within 600 feet of a dwelling or person.  It's a misdemeanor charge, which he did have to pay a fine for.

Four officers involved in the shooting have been placed on routine administrative assignment while a full investigation is done.

ABC 8 News asked Chesterfield Police if they have responded to that house in the past, they could not comment on specific calls to that address.

Meanwhile, Robert Murphy will face charges once he is medically cleared.
