RICHMOND (WRIC)—The ABC 8 News StormTracker weather team is closely monitoring a winter weather system that could bring significant snowfall and a wintry mix to Central Virginia beginning Wednesday evening.
A weak weather system is sliding into and through the region on Monday morning, which will keep us under mostly cloudy skies. It will be dry, but chilly, with highs in the upper 30s. Partly cloudy skies will be over the region Monday night and it will be cold, with lows near 20 degrees.
Tuesday will be a quiet day, with partly sunny skies and highs in the middle 30s. Clouds will increase Tuesday night and early Wednesday, when snow will develop from south to north. However, this system may not be all snow for portions of the ABC 8 News viewing area; the problem lies in the storm's track. While all of the models bring the storm up the east coast, there are some very subtle differences, which could be significant.
As of noon on Monday, we are seeing that colder air will stay over Central Virginia, including the I-95 corridor cities like Richmond and Petersburg. This would lean to a snowier forecast for our viewing area and less of a wintry mix. The models also indicate that the start of the snowstorm will be delayed, beginning Wednesday evening and continuing into midday Thursday. There are still a few more models that will come in during the next several hours and days, and the fine details of the forecast will be worked out.
Any lingering snow or mix will come to an end midday Thursday, and partly sunny skies will return. Friday and Saturday will feature partly sunny skies to a mix of clouds and sun, with highs in the middle 40s.
Stay with ABC 8 News on air, online and on the go throughout this and other winter weather that will affect our area this season.
