Power Outages, Car Wrecks and Snow Damage Plague Area

Posted: Updated:

CHESTERFIELD (WRIC) - At the height of the storm about 10,000 people statewide were without power.

For most people in our area the power is back on, but in Chesterfield and the surrounding Metro-Richmond area, there were about 3,000 people in the dark at one point today.

Homeowners on Trent Road in Bon Air were without power for about five hours.

Power crews moved in and got to work. Five or six trucks arrived in the area, including some up from North Carolina helping out with this storm.

For one couple restoring power was critical. Their livelihood depends on it.

"We happen to have our own chocolate and gelato company and we have storage with our freezers and also our chocolate production center is here at our home," says Jeanne-Louise Womble. "We're very lucky we are back up because we have a lot of trees in Bon Air so when the power goes it is a lot of work for these guys."

An awning collapsed at a Shell station at the corner of Jeff Davis Highway and Route 10.in Chesterfield. The mess of twisted metal was brought down by the heavy snow and wind Wednesday night.

The gas station has been taped off and remains closed until that can be cleaned up.

This storm also led to a number of bad accidents in Chesterfield and as temperatures drop this could freeze causing some dangerous driving conditions.

For many drivers it was a tough commute out there Thursday.

Four separate car crashes all in the same spot within minutes of each other along Chippenham Parkway north near the route 10 exit.

First at about 8:30 a.m. Thursday, a Cadillac hits a patch of ice and spins out, landing off the road in the grass. Minutes later, another driver skids and flips over.

The driver cut his hand but other than that the injuries are minor.

Police warn people to drive slowly when on the roads during inclement weather.
