RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia residents are digging out from a messy winter storm just in time for Valentine's Day.

The storm dropped more than 2 feet of snow in parts of Virginia over two days, leaving highway crews with plenty of work to do. Gov. Terry McAuliffe said more than 950 roads were mostly or partially covered with snow or ice Thursday.

By Thursday evening, storm totals reported to the National Weather Service included 28 inches in Pilot in Montgomery County, 2 feet in Floyd and Giles counties, 20 inches in Blacksburg and 19 in Roanoke and Winchester.

Many public schools and colleges canceled classes on Friday.

State Police reported two weather-related road deaths. Troopers responded to more than 2,200 crashes and disabled vehicles statewide.
