CHESTERFIELD (WRIC) - The teen who led police on this wild chase through Caroline and Spotsylvania County on I-95 is now facing charges.
On Sunday around 8:30 a.m., a service van was stolen from a Grafton Group Home.
Police say they knew immediately who they were looking for. They spotted the van, and briefly pursued it, but they had to stop chasing him. That's when state police later tried to pull the van over on I-95.
Kenny Congleton and his family caught the whole thing on tape.
"It was something that I am used to seeing on TV, like on wildest police chases," he says. "When the cops got him out of the car, I looked at him and I was like oh my god, this is just a kid."
The teen tried to hit a police cruiser, which ran off the road over the guardrail. He then flipped the van after slamming into another police car.
"My first thought was whoever was driving that van is dead," Congleton says. "When he hit the cops, the cops both hit each other and kind of spun like a 360 and hit the guard rails. I was thinking the cops are they hurt. I jumped out and asked the cop if he was okay."
The 15-year-old was taken to the hospital for minor injuries. He has been charged with eluding police, grand larceny and runaway. More charges are expected in from state police.
"For him to get out of that van with just minor injuries and scratches was amazing," Congleton says. "It was one of the wildest days I've ever had in my life."
