CHESTERFIELD (WRIC) - The dad accused of nearly killing his 5-month old daughter appeared in court for the first time Tuesday.
Jonathan Jenkins was given an attorney after the judge read the charges against him. He is held without bond on two felony and two misdemeanor charges, meanwhile, his 5-month-old baby girl is still in critical condition at VCU Medical Center.
Police say Jenkins was watching his daughter Saturday night at an apartment complex in Chesterfield. The baby's mom came home to find her daughter with serious injuries to her face. Police say Jenkins hit the woman as she tried to call 911 for help. She escaped with the baby to a neighbor's home.
8News uncovered court documents in Henrico County from 2011 and found that this is not the first time the 24-year-old has been in trouble with the law.
Jenkins was charged with conspiracy to commit robbery and conspiracy to commit burglary while armed with a deadly weapon. He ultimately took a plea deal for a lesser charge. His sentence was five years in jail, but he didn't have to serve that time as long as he was on good behavior.
He was also found guilty of obstruction of justice in Henrico and his track record continues in Prince George County with several other charges, including DWI.
The baby's grandfather was in court today, but he had no comment.
Jenkins will be back in court on March 25.
