RICHMOND (WRIC) - Police say the child and two other people shot Tuesday night outside a convenience store on Government Road in the Fulton neighborhood appear to be victims of random gunfire.
Witnesses tell us they heard several gunshots.
An employee who works there says he's surprised something this violent happened.
"I'm really upset because this is a neighborhood store," says Ali Tahar. "We have family coming in and out... parents, kids, everybody. It could've happened to anyone which is why it's so surprising at the same time."
The area was taken over Wednesday by the Richmond Police Forensic Unit. They searched the parking lot and store looking for any clues to help them find the attackers.
Despite the shooting, it was business as usual for many customers. But there was a sense of uneasiness for many of them, especially the ones that live nearby.
"It's pretty scary for our neighborhood because there's a lot of people that live around here and have kids, ya know?" says neighbor Jeff Kitts.
The store is under heavy surveillance and police confiscated security tapes right away, but employees say nothing on the tapes looked suspicious before the attack.
"I saw a glimpse of the tape," Tahar says. "The people were hanging out outside a little bit, but it didn't seem like anyone was going to pull out of nowhere and let off 12 rounds, you know what I mean?
It's not clear how many shots were fired, but the victims are expected to be okay. Police are following up on leads and are hoping to make an arrest soon. They are looking for two young men.
If you know anything, call Crime Stoppers at 780-1000.
