RICHMOND (WRIC) - Two big stores are leaving Stony Point Fashion Park.
Tuesday, Champps Americana Restaurant served its last meal, and just Thursday, Starbucks announced it will close its doors on Monday, February 24.
Jennie Stevens lives right across the street from the mall and frequently goes to the shops and restaurants.
"It seems fairly busy. It's not as busy as say Short Pump. There are some places that are kind of vacant and have been vacant for a while," she said.
Just this month, Champps and Starbucks announced they're closing after 10 years at those locations.
"I was surprised Champps closed. I was just there two weeks ago and it was full, so I'm surprised and disappointed too."
Local shoppers say they've noticed a change.
"Some of the stores that I like are not here any longer," said Pam Parsons.
But the General Manager of Stony Point Steve Bonniville says the center is going well.
"We don't plan on going anywhere any time soon," he said in a phone interview. "Obviously we'd love to keep both of those locations here. but for us, we're continuing to put on business as usual and find replacements for both of those locations as we move forward."
Local say they remain optimistic.
"I think it'll continue to attract people. They have enough events going on in the mall--summer concert series and ice skating in the winter. But of course if places keep closing--who knows," said Stevens.
A Champps spokesperson sent 8News a statement regarding the decision to close:
"This was a difficult business decision and no reflection on our team or the community. We had a great 10-year run in Richmond, but unfortunately economic and other conditions have changed and the business had been struggling for some time. We provided severance pay to everyone on the team based on length of service, and hope to return to Richmond in the future."
A spokesperson for Starbucks also explained why the location is leaving Stony Point:
"As part of Starbucks standard course of business, we continually evaluate our business to ensure a healthy store portfolio. After careful consideration, we determined that it is best to close the store at Stony Point Fashion Park in Richmond, VA. As difficult as this is, we must make the right business decisions for the sake of Starbucks long-term growth. All partners (employees) at this ten-year-old location will keep their jobs and relocate to other Starbucks stores in the area. We look forward to continue serving customers at our other Richmond locations."
