RICHMOND (WRIC) - In a lengthy Facebook rant, Virginia State Sen. Steve Martin called pregnant women "hosts," adding "some refer to them as mothers."
The Republican Senator's words were in response to a Valentine's Day card sent to him by the Virginia Pro-Choice Coalition that urged him to reconsider his stance on abortion.
In a Facebook post (the text has since been edited), Martin quotes the card and responds with the following:
"You can count on me to never get in the way of you 'preventing' an unintentional pregnancy.' I'm not actually sure what that means, because if it's 'unintentional' you must have been trying to prevent it. And, I don't expect to be in the room or will I do anything to prevent you from obtaining a contraceptive. However, once a child does exist in your womb, I'm not going to assume a right to kill it just because the child's host (some refer to them as mothers) doesn't want it to remain alive."
Virginia women wore shirts emblazoned with "Not A Host" when they visited the gallery of the Virginia Senate to stage a silent protest against Martin.
"Senator Martin's offensive comments are merely a symptom of the disregard and disrespect anti-choice politicians show Virginia women," said ProgressVA executive director Anna Scholl in an email. "Virginia women deserve better than politicians who dismiss their reproductive rights and throw up barriers to access for reproductive health care."
"As one of eight children, a father, grandfather, uncle, and great uncle, anyone can look at my life and legislative history to know that recent attacks directed at me are based on incorrect assertions and are completely unjust," Sen. Martin says in a statement. "Obviously, I don't see my mother, six sisters, nieces, daughter-in-law, friends, colleagues, or any other mother or expectant mother as just a "host" of the child they bear in their womb."
"My writing, in response to an attack that a number of pro-life legislators received via a Valentines card, was playing their argument, within that very card, back to them. The parenthetical statement that followed immediately after the word ‘host,' made it clear I see them as mothers, not hosts."
