PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC)—A portion of I-85 South was shut down in the City of Petersburg near the I-95 interchange Wednesday morning while Virginia State Police conducted a death investigation.
Around 10:40 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 25, troopers were called to I-85 South near South Sycamore Street for a report of a male lying in a travel lane. Police arrived on scene to find a deceased male who had been struck by multiple vehicles.
The body, which has not yet been identified, will be transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond to determine the exact cause and manner of death.
The Virginia State Police Accident Reconstruction Team, special agents from the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation Richmond Field Office and the Petersburg Bureau of Police are assisting with the investigation.
The I-85 South left, center and right lanes were all closed at mile marker 69 for several hours late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning due to the incident. All lanes reopened at about 5:30 a.m.
