Neighborhoods React to Richmond 2015 Course

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND (WRIC) - The courses for the Richmond 2015 Road World Championships were unveiled and about 1,000 elite cyclists from all over the world will be here to compete.

People living along the race routes can expect the inconvenience of road closures, traffic and crowds. But many people are looking past the obstacles and looking forward to the event.

People in Richmond reacting enthusiastically to the 2015 Road World Championships.

But unlike the Tour Dupont, hosted in Richmond years ago, the world's competition lasts nine days and covers a lot of ground from the urban landscape of the city to the rural roads of Hanover and Henrico counties.

"I think it's great," says Richmond resident Tom Wilson. "Richmond has a lot to offer, not just domestically but to a worldwide audience. It's a great opportunity to show what Richmond is all about."

One of the courses goes along Osborn Turnpike in eastern Henrico.  Lisa Garrett lives right on the route.

"I'm kinda surprised I didn't know that," she says. "It's kinda exciting. I'll definitely have a bird's eye view."

On race day, Garrett's road will be closed for four or five hours so she'll have to choose to stay put or leave home for most of the day. Plus there's the possibility of hundreds of spectators.

But she's ok with the inconvenience.

"The traffic is definitely an issue and being trapped won't be that fun, but I think it's fine. I'm kinda excited about it now."

It's the same story along Route 5. Closing this road could mean shutting down Sunday services if parishioners can't drive to church.

Residents in Richmond's National Battlefield Park will also experience the inconvenience of road closures as cyclists race through this historical area.

Next week, event organizers begin meeting with people impacted along the race routes. They hope to address concerns and answer questions about road closures and other specifics.
