GOOCHLAND (WRIC) - The Goochland Drive-In Theater needs your help to improve its 5-year-old concession stand and kitchen.
Owner of the theater John Heidel is getting ready for the new season that starts in March. But this time, he's also working on a bigger project to expand the snack bar.
"Expand the operations in terms of adding more equipment, more kitchen space, more serving space. And that will really free up everybody for the place to be more efficient," said Heidel.
Heidel says on a busy night, they'll serve up to 2,000 people, and with their current space, some customers will wait half an hour just to get food.
"To me, that's unacceptable. When it gets to be that crazy, it's not fun for anybody. And that's the total antithesis of what this place is about," he said.
So he decided to create a Kickstarter campaign to raise donations. He says that's the only way to prevent them from increasing prices.
"We keep our prices low intentionally so it's affordable for families. food doesn't cost more than $3.75 -- that's the most expensive item on our menu."
Heidel made the announcement less than 24 hours go on the theater's Facebook page, and already the website has raised more than $2,000.
"I tell ya--it makes you very humble. And it makes you incredibly grateful for the support. So we're just going to see where it goes," he said.
The theater has 14 more days to meet their $23,000 goal--just in time for their opening March 21.
