RICHMOND (WRIC)If you've been suffering from a cough, runny nose or congestion, you're not alone.

Doctors in Central Virginia are staying busy with people who are battling upper respiratory infections.

"Most of the time it just starts out as a viral infection," said Dr. Scott Greenfield of Patient First.  "People come in with their usual cough, runny nose, sneezing, sore throats, and this time of year we definitely see more upper respiratory problems."

That's because most of us stay inside more during winter months, so we're exposed to others germs. Those germs spread, leading, in many cases, to infection.

Fortunately, upper respiratory infections aren't too serious, but doctors say it's one illness your body has to fight off on its own.

"There's not too much you can do except lots of fluids, rest and over-the-counter medications," said Greenfield.

If you feel you're not getting better, doctors say it's better to seek help early rather than wait.
