RICHMOND (WRIC) - Coming on the heels of the announcement of a new logo and brand identity, VCU unveiled plans for a new $25 million basketball complex behind the Siegel Center.

The state of the art facility will be part of a new effort to re-brand the program and will include, among other things, new practice courts.

"When this building is actually raised and we open the doors, there are so many people that have been a part of it and apart of making that happen, so I thank you," says VCU Basketball Coach Shaka Smart.

The total cost of the complex will be $25 million, with $14.5 million raised through private donations and the other $10.5 million from non-state funding.

Coach Smart says the new facility will help them when it comes to recruitment.

"When you're 16,17,18 years old and you look at a $25 million practice facility that is going to have a huge effect."

Aside from a practice facility the building will include locker rooms, coaches offices, strength and conditioning areas, a sports medicine center and a players dining room.

"I've never been at a place where there is such a shared vision for success on and off of the court between the people that work at the school from the University President on down."

VCU just recently had their 50th straight sell out at home, and are hoping for their fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.

"It is a great time to be associated with VCU Athletics," says Ed McLaughlin, Director of Athletics. "I don't think there is any question about that."

A building behind the Siegel Center will be demolished to make room for the new practice center. Construction is scheduled to start this spring and  is expected to take about 15 months.
