RICHMOND (WRIC) - Urgent care centers are opening their doors to handle some of the growing patient load and hospital systems are now part of this boom in healthcare.

Jason Scott woke up with a sore throat and congestion, so Bon Secours Good Health Express was one of his first stops of the day.

"It’s not too far from my home and it's really close to my work," he says.

The Brook Road urgent care center opened Monday morning, part of a trend that's been growing in recent years -- as patients look for an alternative to crowded emergency rooms, it's becoming increasingly more difficult to get a same-day doctor appointment.

"Our objective is not to take patients from the primary care physician,” says Jill Russell, Administrative Director for Emergency Services. “We want to be an adjunct to that care and give them care the hours their primary care physician is not open."

Russell says the facility can treat colds, cuts, broken bones and more.

“Our urgent care center is set up to take care of sprains and strains,” she says. “If your child falls at the playground and hurts their elbow."

There's a lab for certain tests. X-rays are done on site, which leads to a quicker diagnosis for patients like Scott.

And true emergencies are left for the ER.

"We want to make sure that we offer the right care at the right time in the right place," Russell says.

Bon Secours says it's focusing on this good health express but adding others across our area isn't out of the question.
