HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC)—The Henrico County Police Division is unveiling a major program it says will change the future of crime fighting.

It's called TEMPO and stands for Technology-Enhanced Modern Policing Operations.

The department has been working on the project for several years and Chief Doug Middleton officially launched the program Tuesday afternoon.

"The days of officers getting in police cars and riding around and waiting for a call for service to come in are over with," Middleton said.

Police officers will now have all the information they need to fight crime on a computer dashboard sitting in their cars.

Leaders say this means they'll be able to use time more efficiently and stay out in neighborhoods more, leading to tips from residents.

"I wouldn't be able to do my job now without all of the avenues that we have," said Officer Jermaine Alley.  "We run into people so much that want to have that communication with the police, but don't want to call 501-5000."

Residents are now able to text message, email, Facebook message or send tips through other social media venues.

"I've had text messages and emails come through about information related to wanted people," Alley said.

People in Henrico County neighborhoods are confident that TEMPO will help solve crime and make neighborhoods safer.

"We can walk the streets at night; we can walk during the daytime," said resident Buddy Moyer.
