AMELIA COUNTY, Va. (WRIC)Animal rescue workers are raising money for a dog that was shot numerous times and left for dead.

Amelia Animal Control Officers found Morgan, a female one-year-old chow mix, on the side of the road in mid-January, according to Capital Area Rescue Effort (CARE) in Henrico County.

It was first believed the dog had been hit by a car, but upon inspection by veterinarians, bullet wounds were found on Morgan's back, chest, hip and front leg.

"We believe she was used as target practice," said Morgan's foster mother, Beverly Guidt.  "It's sickening actually to think that she lay there and suffered the way that she did."

Dr. Susan Ware with CARE says that Morgan had been shot by more than one type of firearm and suffering multiple wounds. Her front leg was badly shattered and had to be amputated last month.

Doctors determined that the dog's rear legs need work as well, as the ACLs in both legs are torn due to the stress put on them in the past few weeks.

"Because of the weight bearing issues and the way she's not shifted her weight with the amputation, she's also torn her ACLs," Guidt said.

Morgan has surgery scheduled for next Monday. She'll then have at least one more operation and Guidt hopes that once the dog's back to normal, she'll be able to used as a therapy animal.

"We think she'll be such an inspiration to veterans who might have lost limbs or children that are ill and going through terrible things," she said.

Guidt says Morgan has adjusted well to walking on three legs and her personality has improved now that her injured leg has been removed.

CARE has set up a gofundme account for Morgan, with the goal of raising $8,000 for her care. As of 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, CARE had surpassed that goal by more than $10,000, with a total of $18,650.
