HOUSTON, Tx. (WRIC) – Two women are facing child endangerment charges, after police say one of them gave a one-year-old girl six shots of vodka.
The child’s mother, 17-year-old Shadreon Jefferson, was asleep when the victim’s aunt, 24-year-old Shamara Batiste, allegedly gave her young niece a vodka mixer.
The child was rushed to a Houston hospital after she was dropped off at her father’s home. Doctors there said she had a blood alcohol content of 0.268, three times the legal limits for adults. The child was allegedly swaying and smelled strongly of alcohol.
According to a criminal complaint, Batiste admitted that the baby drank about six shots of vodka before falling asleep.
Jefferson is now free on $10,000 bond, while Batiste remains at large. State District Judge Ryan Patrick signed a protective order on Wednesday, which prevents either the girl’s mother or aunt from seeing her.
The child spent four days in the hospital before being released into the care of her maternal grandmother.
