A Dinwiddie mother who was charged with the first-degree murder of her newborn baby last fall pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter on Wednesday morning.
Around 2:15 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, Dinwiddie County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to the 18000 block of Namozine Road for a report of a woman who had given birth to a baby in a toilet. Deputies located the mother, 22-year-old Devin Monique Small, at the scene; the baby had been left in the toilet and was deceased.
Small and her mother, Angela Small, were both charged with first-degree murder in connection with the newborn’s death.
Angela Small has since passed away, but Devin Small appeared in Dinwiddie Circuit Court on May 7 and pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter. She received a three-year sentence, all of which was suspended.
