CHARLES CITY COUNTY (WRIC) - Charles City County Schools must slash $100,000 from its budget immediately and if additional funds are found within the next 30 days, a total of $436,000 could be slashed.

Tuesday night, the school superintendent presented her proposed cuts to the Board of Supervisors, who voted unanimously to accept them.

Spring sports and after-school programs survived the cuts but substitute teachers, teaching materials, equipment and a school nurse are getting slashed.

"You're on the verge of making history by allowing our schools to become nonfunctional," one county resident said to the Board of Supervisors.

A teacher commented, "Our schools are getting to the bare bones and that's a huge problem for us."

Several weeks ago, the Board of Supervisors told the school system to cut $436,000 immediately.  Supervisors claim the county lost nearly one million dollars in revenue from an agreement with Waste Management.

Every department in the county had to chop something but the schools carried the biggest load.

Supervisors voted to immediately take $100,000 from the system in hopes that additional funding will be found so the entire amount doesn't need to go.

"Every day we are looking for additional funding," says Board of Supervisors Chairman Bill Coada.  "We are looking for anything and everything we can to get through this fiscal year."

The School Board Chairwoman says this entire process has been extremely painful.

"We are going to have to hold our spending and just monitor every dollar we have," says Chairwoman Helen Payne-Jones.

Also at Tuesday's meeting the Board of Supervisors received its budget for next year.  Almost every department is looking at even more cuts.
