William "Willie" Daquan Lee (no relation), 18, of the 3900 block of Chamberlayne Avenue, was taken into custody by the U.S. Marshal's Regional Fugitive Task Force on March 11, on unrelated charges.
"We feel relieved, because at first I thought it was going to go unsolved," said Kahron Lee's friend Fabion Freeman. "We didn't hear anything. It was kept quiet."
According to prosecutors, Willie Lee confronted the victim at the off-campus Birches apartment complex at 1304 W. Graham Road around 12 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 24 and tried to take off his sneakers. Kahron resisted, and was shot during the ensuing struggle. Prosecutors said the suspect then took some of the victim's personal items, but not his shoes.
After a Richmond Police Department investigation spanning several weeks, numerous indictments against Lee were handed down by the Multi-Jurisdictional Grand Jury.
"We got a lot of information," said Major Steve Drew. "Cooperation from Virginia Union students … the community … the neighborhood in that area … it was just everyone working together and sharing that information. The detectives put countless hours from the moment that incident occurred."
Willie Lee has been charged with first-degree murder, robbery and two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Although they're happy about the arrest, students say they're still dealing with a tremendous loss.
"It's going to take a while to get over it, if people ever get over it," Freeman said.
The investigation of this case continues; anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact Metro Richmond Crime Stoppers by calling 804-780-1000 or texting “iTip” followed by the tip to 274637.
Willie Lee is being held in the Richmond City Jail on unrelated felony firearms charges and is expected to be arraigned in Richmond Circuit Court on March 27.
