Board OKs Year-Round Classes At 2 Petersburg Schools

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The Virginia Board of Education has approved year-round school programs at two struggling Petersburg public schools.

The city is implementing year-round instruction at Peabody Middle and A.P. Hill Elementary in hopes of raising student achievement at both schools. Peabody Middle School has been denied state accreditation for eight consecutive years, while A.P. Hill Elementary has been accredited with warning for three straight years.

Under state law, school divisions must be granted a waiver from the Board of Education to begin instruction before the Labor Day Holiday.

Petersburg Superintendent Joseph C. Melvin said the district has begun preparations for the extended year and he's "comfortable that we are ready to go." The waiver granted this week allows instruction to begin Aug. 4.

State school officials praised the Petersburg plan.
