Support for Medical Marijuana Growing in Virginia

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) - A new poll from Quinnipiac University shows 84 percent of Virginia voters support legalizing marijuana for medical use.

Some parents are hoping the changing attitudes lead to changes in Virginia regarding medical marijuana. One mother believes it could be a huge help for her daughter.

13-year old Haley Smith suffers from a rare seizure disorder called Davet Syndrome, which causes her to have hundreds of seizures every year.

Haley's mother Lisa is fighting for medical marijuana to be legalized in Virginia, believing it will cut down on Haley's seizures. She says they've tried every legal remedy available.

"She's not going to live a full life span. She's not expected to go too late in life, so if we can improve her quality of life now, that's what we're wanting to do," she says. "We're really at our last resort. We don't have anything else and her seizures are not going to stop."

A new Quinnipiac poll results show overwhelming support for medical marijuana and Smith is hopeful it could lead to changes in Virginia.

"I'm really positive that something is going to be brought up in the 2015 session."

Smith says they're not looking for marijuana that can be smoked but a marijuana based medicine called CBD, which does not have the psychoactive effect.

However, there are still skeptics.

"It dulls your critical faculties your memory is impaired your sharpness the quickness and response and understanding are diminished," says Del. Bob Marshall.

"Well my child is 13 and functions at a 3-5 year old level so that's not really a concern," Smith says, adding that she'll continue to fight.

"Her disabilities have made me stronger and helped me to find my strength."
