RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) - Several headstones are vandalized at the East End Cemetery on the Richmond-Henrico line.

Volunteers who work to keep up the area want to know who is responsible.

Over the last year, John Shuck took it upon himself to help clean up the East End Cemetery.

The historically African American cemetery is privately owned by a group called east end burial association, but according to Henrico County, there's been no trace of them for some time.

"They may have died off," Shuck says. "For all practical purposes, it's now abandoned."

That's why Shuck has led volunteers to uncover headstones - some as old as 1897. But he's made a few heartbreaking discoveries over the last week.

Two headstones are smashed down the middle and two bigger ones knocked over.

The volunteers say they've been at the cemetery enough to know what normal wear and tear is and what's not. Someone would have to come in on purpose and knock over the massive and heavy headstone.

Although it appears many families have abandoned their plots in the cemetery, there are still a few who routinely visit. Shuck doesn't want to see their memories tampered with.

"We don't know who we're going to find out here," he says. "It's a way to connect with your past."

Shuck contacted Henrico Police. If more vandalism is reported, police may start stepping up patrols in the area.
