Thoroughbred Horse Racing In Jeopardy At Colonial Downs

Posted: Updated:
NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) - Thoroughbred horse racing may not be featured at Colonial downs this year, if an agreement isn't reached soon between the race track and a horseman association.

This past weekend at the Dogwood Classic, thousands flocked to Colonial Downs to see Thoroughbred horse racing at it's finest.

What they didn't know was that may be the only horses hitting the turf at Colonial Downs this year.

"It would be detrimental to Colonial Downs, the customer, the employees," stated Jeanna Bouzek of Colonial Downs

Not only is the horseless season affecting the track in New Kent County, Colonial Downs off track betting facilities, or OTB's, are suffering too.

"If you don't have Thoroughbred horse racing at the live track, you can't have thoroughbred horse racing showing at the OTB's," explained Bouzek.

Colonial Downs operates eight off track betting sites; with no Thoroughbred horse racing showing at any of them, four have had to shut down.

In return New Kent County is also suffering.

Officials there tell me they are projecting a loss of more that $400,000 if horse racing doesn't show up and show up fast.

Bouzek said, "Our hope is to have thoroughbred horse racing in 2014."

In order to do that, Colonial Downs says they have to find a new Horseman's Association who shares their same vision for the track.

"Less days of racing, bringing in better horses and running for more money."

Nothing is a done deal just yet, but Colonial Downs officials say no racing this year could mean more exciting racing next year. For now, Bouzek remains positive.

"It might be tough for 2014, but we are willing to take that chance of not having the racing, so we can put on the type of event in the future that we want to."
