HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -
Virginia State Police are investigating after a tractor-trailer overturned and spilled 76,000 pounds of oranges onto Interstate 295 North on Friday morning.
Around 3:30 a.m. on April 11, VSP responded to Exit 38/Pole Green Road, where a 2006 Peterbilt tractor-trailer had run off the right side of the roadway. The driver overcorrected, causing the vehicle to overturn onto its passenger side.
The tractor-trailer was loaded with roughly 76,000 pounds of oranges, which spilled out onto the interstate. According to Sergeant Thomas Molnar, there was also a diesel fuel spill from the vehicle's saddle tanks.
All northbound lanes of I-295 in Hanover County were shut down at mile marker 38, near Route 627/Meadowbridge Road, until about 7:15 a.m. The right lane and Exit 38A remained closed until about 11:30 a.m.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, 36-year-old Jose A. Cruz, of Orlando, Fla., was wearing his safety belt. He was transported to VCU Medical Center by ambulance for treatment of minor injuries.
VSP continues to investigate the crash. Cruz has been charged with reckless driving - failure to maintain proper control.
