RICHMOND, Va (WRIC) - Richmond CenterStage welcomed actors, producers, and cadets to a private screening of Field of Lost Shoes Sunday evening.

Thomas Farrell is the film writer and producer.

"It's a coming of age stories about the boys involved in the battle," he said.

The film follows seven young VMI cadets--ages 15 to 20--and their role at the Battle of New Market during the Civil War. It happened on may 15, 1864 when VMI cadets fought as a unit.

“It's the only time in history when a school of cadets has marched into battle,” said Farrell.

“It's a story of heroism and onerous decisions, great drama and love and friendship and sacrifice,” said Jason Isaacs who plays Major General John C. Breckinridge.

Ten of them died and 47 were wounded on the battlefield.

Hundreds of current VMI cadets paraded from the capitol to the theater for the premiere, reminding viewers this film is about real boys who sacrificed everything.

“These young men, they're my age marching into battle and fighting and risking their lives,” said actor Nolan Gould.

“These young boys rallied to defend their homeland and to defend their livelihood and their families,” said actor Luke Benward.

The title of film is also based on the battle.

‘It was a newly planted field and it sucked the shoes off their feet. and that's been called the field of lost shoes because of all the carnage that happened in that part of the battlefield,” said Farrell.

“There's blood in the soil, there's history in the air. the whole place hums with songs of victory and battles and the entire fabric of the history of America,” said Isaacs.
