RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) - It's Spring Break. While a lot of Richmonders are traveling all week, many more people are coming into town to spend their vacations here. Today 8News caught up with riders at Segway of Richmond, which is busy with one tourist and landmark after another this week.
"It's fun to see the things I have to teach about in my fourth grade class," says Meryl Butler, a local teacher. She's lived here for seven years and is using this week away from school to be a tourist in her own town.
For others, like Jane Eckstrom, this week is a way to celebrate the new season and get away. "We're from New York. We've had a long winter. It's nice to get out, fresh air, sunshine. Flowers are all out. It's beautiful." About Richmond she says, "I liked seeing all the different buildings and the culture."
Richmond's past is a huge draw, as we're seeing following the success of Lincoln. It was filmed here in 2011, and the City continues to welcome visitors interested in that story and more.
"Richmond has tons of history. There's 400 years of history here," says Segway of Richmond owner Buck Ward. "There's not a little area of the city that you can't find history."
Ward says his company has definitely seen growth over the years. Last year alone, more than 10,000 people from all 50 states and 25 countries came here for a tour. Spring Break provides a boost to business after the cold months, and visitors like Jane Eckstrom are ready to see all there is to see and spend. "It was a lot of fun, and we're going to get something good to eat now."
