RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) - A shocking crime has a Richmond community shocked after a pet dog is stolen from a woman's apartment on Chamberlayne Avenue.

"It's just horrible I love her to death and she's my baby," says Victoria Klein, the owner of a bulldog/pit bull mix named Lexi.

The 18-month old dog was taken from her home sometime overnight Saturday into Sunday. Klein has owned Lexi since the dog was just five weeks old and is distraught that someone would steal the animal.

"I come every day thinking that she's going to be here and then when I get here I just start crying," Klein says.

Klein went to a friend's house Saturday night and when she returned home, she found her clothes thrown everywhere and a back window wide open.

"The window was broken out completely."

Equally disturbing, Lexi's brother Lars - normally a rambunctious dog - refused to move or even greet Klein. A trip to vet revealed a cracked rib.

Klein believes someone knew she owned the bulldog/pit bull mix and wanted to use the animal for breeding.

"There's been a lot of people that have been trying to breed with her but she's only like a year and a half."

Police are investigating the crime and Lexi's photo is spreading on social media.
Klein hopes someone sees the dog and whoever stole her brings her back.
