Fatal Dump Truck Crash Closes Part of Route 54 in Hanover

HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -

A dump truck crash on West Patrick Henry Road (Route 54) in Hanover County claimed the life of one person and closed the roadway between Scotchtown Road and Pinehurst Forest Drive for several hours.

At approximately 12:00 p.m., Hanover County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene of the single-vehicle accident in the 15000 block of West Patrick Henry Road (route 54), near Scotchtown Road. A 1987 GMC dump truck ran off the side of the roadway, overturned on its right side and slide across the eastbound lane before coming to rest on the left shoulder.

The driver and sole occupant died at the scene; the victim's name has not been released, pending next-of-kin notification.

Authorities say the truck had been hauling a full load of dirt. West Patrick Henry Road between Scotchtown Road and Pinehurst Forest Drive will remain closed for several hours, as crews work to remove debris from the scene. Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area until the road can be reopened.
