An 81-year-old grandmother became the victim of a crime while shopping at a popular Henrico store in the middle of the day.
Police say what happened to her could happen to anyone if you're not careful.
The crime took place at a Ross clothing store in Short Pump but it really could happen anywhere.
The woman had a wallet stolen out of her purse that was sitting in her cart.
"It's heartbreaking to know that we live in a world that gets darker by the moment," said shopper Doreen Dickens.
Surveillance images show the man and woman police say are behind the crime. Detectives say the cunning couple distracted the grandmother by having her leave her cart leaving the purse and wallet behind.
"The male asked her questions about clothing and things that he should buy," said Lt. Linda Toney.
Investigators say as the man was speaking with the grandmother, the woman stole the wallet containing cash, debit, and credit cards.
"This is a lady who was minding her own business, who went shopping and was taken advantage of," said Toney.
Police say the couple drove down the road about a mile to Best Buy used the woman's credit cards to buy thousands of dollars worth of electronics.
Shoppers can't believe the crime but Henrico Police say thefts like this happen all the time.
In fact, they've created a safety video to show how fast it can occur.
"It's a good example of making sure that you always keep your things secure," said Toney.
The search is on for the suspects and police remind you that if you see something suspicious, don't be afraid to speak up.
"I'll walk over and I'll say, 'Hey, do you need some help? Is there something going on or do you know them?" said Dickens.
Police tell us the grandmother wasn't hurt and she was able to cancel her credit cards before the thieves made any more purchases.
