What started as Twitter chatter between Dale Earnhardt Jr., Robert Griffin III and Richmond International Raceway President Dennis Bickmeier has led to Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III driving the Pace Car to start Saturday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at the Richmond International Raceway.
After going through Pace Car training and spending time with pal Dale Earnhardt Jr., Griffin will lead the 43 NASCAR drivers to the Green Flag at Saturday’s TOYOTA OWNERS 400 Sprint Cup Series race. In addition to driving the Pace Car, Griffin, along with his Washington Redskins Coach and NASCAR team owner Joe Gibbs, will get a pre-race garage tour of the NASCAR vehicles.
In Richmond, Griffin will join thousands of fans who align with the Redskins and NASCAR. The weekend will kick off Friday with a doubleheader race night, featuring the ToyotaCare 250 NASCAR Nationwide Series race and the BLUE OX 100 NASCAR K&N Pro Series East race. Griffin’s honorary drive will take place on Saturday and tickets start at $40.
