RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -
The Metro Richmond Zoo welcomed a new member to their family earlier this week.
A baby giraffe was born, and hundreds of zoo visitors were able to watch it live.
Jessie, a 13-year-old female Reticulated giraffe, gave birth to her fourth calf at approximately 5:10 pm in the African exhibit. The calf stands over 6 feet tall and weighs around 175 pounds. In the past, Jessie has not taken care of her previous calves, and zoo staff has had to bottle raise them. This time, Jessie allowed her calf to nurse, and everything seems to be going well so far.
The calf was born on exhibit in front of hundreds of zoo visitors, but both the mother and baby will be kept inside their shelter for the next few days to allow more private time for bonding.
