RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) - Learning that you may have cancer can be a scary time, but for some patients there's technology that can find it and remove it faster.
Cellvizio is a microscope and laser scanner that helps to zero in on and biopsy what older technology can't.
Chesterfield resident Daniel Doyle had a Cellvizio procedure a couple months ago after learning he had pre-cancerous cells in his stomach. He's already a colon cancer survivor and is being treated for prostate cancer right now. "After already having two cancers, I don't want another one, and finding it early is the best thing you can do."
Dr. Bimaljit Sandhu of Richmond Gastroenterology Associates used Cellvizio to remove a tumor from Doyle. "If we treat it, we make a difference by preventing cancer from developing."
Doyle says he had no side effects, and the recovery time was minimal. He was especially happy to receive his diagnosis immediately following the procedure. Like other patients who've had Cellvizio, Doyle went home from the hospital with answers instead of questions.
"I'm particularly glad of because I want to stick around a while," he says while smiling and talking about his love of gardening and spending time with his nine grandchildren. "There's a future again, and I like it."
Like in Doyle's case, doctors are using Cellvizio along the gastrointestinal tract. It's also helpful in the areas of pulmonology, urology and to detect changes in the pancreas before cancer develops.
