RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) - The City of Richmond has a new explosives dog and how she got here is quite a story.

Shelby and her master Officer Mark Castillo met a few weeks ago when the Richmond Police Department was searching for a new explosives dog.

"I liked the way she worked," he says. "I liked her age just everything about her."

Bomb dogs can cost nearly $10,000 but Shelby only cost the department $5 thanks to a special program in North Carolina.

"They had some dogs that had served either in Iraq or Afghanistan that they were looking for some homes for."

And Shelby has had experience.  She served a tour in Afghanistan and has been several places in the states, making her just as good as other bomb dogs.

"Equally as qualified," Castillo says. "Probably more so because she's already got some real world experience."

Shelby arrived in Richmond ready to respond to bomb scares and suspicious packages in a calm, quiet way.

"All bomb dogs are passive. So we only want them to do something passive in nature when they find it. Shelby's response is she's gonna lay down."

Richmond Police plans to have Shelby around for at least five years.
