RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) - The ABC 8News StormTracker weather team is keeping an eye on a severe weather system that could bring some thunderstorms and tornadoes to Central Virginia on Friday afternoon and evening.

The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch until 9 p.m. Friday for the following counties: Amelia, Brunswick, Charles City, Charlotte, Chesterfield, Dinwiddie, Greensville, Halifax, Isle of Wight, James City, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Nottoway, Pittsylvania, Prince Edward, Prince George, Southampton, Surry, Sussex and York. This watch also applies to the independent cities of Chesapeake, Colonial Heights, Danville, Emporia, Franklin, Hampton, Hopewell, Newport News, Norfolk, Petersburg, Poquoson, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Virginia Beach and Williamsburg.

Skies will be partly sunny in the morning, but clouds will increase during the midday hours ahead of a cold front, which will push into the region during the afternoon. High temperatures will reach the upper 70s. Showers and thunderstorms will develop after 4 p.m. and continue through 8 p.m. Not everyone in the ABC 8News viewing area will see these thunderstorms, but those who do get them will have quick, heavy downpours and possibly some gusty winds. After 8 p.m., this cold front and the thunderstorms will move to the east of the Richmond metro area and out of most of Central Virginia, allowing for mostly cloudy skies.

The National Weather Service was issued a tornado warning for eastern Amelia, west central Chesterfield and southeastern Powhatan Counties in Central Virginia and expired at 4:45 p.m.

Saturday will be a very nice day with partly sunny skies, with highs around 80 degrees. The weather should be very nice for the Toyota Owners 400 NASCAR race at RIR on Saturday night; race temperatures will be in the lower 70s under partly cloudy skies.

Sunday and Monday will be very nice with partly sunny to mostly sunny skies, with highs around 70 degrees. A weather system will move in late Monday night and Tuesday and have a very tough time leaving, so there will be clouds and rain in the region through Thursday.
