HANOVER, Va. (WRIC) -

Over-the-top promposals are all the rage with teens this spring. On Friday morning, a local teen’s promposal went national on “Good Morning America” with the help of ABC 8News Anchor/Investigative Reporter Kerri O’Brien.

The morning of April 25, the Lee-Davis Players, a theater group at Mechanicsville’s Lee-Davis High School, thought they were at the Hanover Tavern to be interviewed by O’Brien about their highly successful run of the musical “Grease.” They had no idea they were part of an elaborate ploy so that 17-year-old junior Josh Meisner could carry out his unique prom proposal live on “Good Morning America” to his unsuspecting girlfriend, junior Samantha “Sammy” Davis.

“It’s all been pretty surreal,” Josh said. “I am from a small town. That doesn’t really happen to people.”

It was Sammy’s mother, Leigh Rooke, who entered a video of Josh singing for a GMA contest.

“They called within 30 minutes of me putting it online,” she said.

Sammy received a promposal she’ll never forget, as GMA Entertainment Correspondent Rachel Smith filled in the students on the secret.

“This is not your wonderful local ABC affiliate WRIC 8,” Smith said. “You are actually live on ‘Good Morning America’ right now.”

Seconds later, a taped version of Josh singing “Best Day Of My Life” by American Authors began to play. Then, a tuxedo-clad Josh walked in to serenade Sammy with the same song, got down on one knee and popped the question.

Live on national television, Sammy said yes.

“I don’t think it can get any better,” she said. “It makes sense now; he was being so secretive.”

Rooke said, “I was back there crying.”

Josh, who apologized to Sammy for having to tell so many lies to keep the big secret, is relieved his plan went smoothly.

“I can’t imagine it going any better,” he said.

According to “Good Morning America,” Rent the Runway will give Sammy a dress she can wear to the prom and keep, while Men’s Wearhouse will provide a tuxedo for Josh as they head to the dance next month.
