RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) - Nearly 40 homeowners in Richmond’s Church Hill neighborhood received free home repairs Saturday as part of National Rebuilding Day.

For more than 20 years the non-profit organization “Rebuilding Together of Richmond” has partnered with community sponsors helped low-income families keep their homes safe and up-to-date. Saturday they celebrated renovating their 1,000th home.

More than 1,000 volunteers worked hard to complete all the projects in one day. "I love it. I love helping the elderly, especially and people who have worked their whole lives and they just want to be able to continue to live in comfort,” said volunteer Martinique Perfetti.

Perfetti helped renovate Felix Christian’s home. She has lived in Church Hill for decades, but over time her house has deteriorated. “My grandmother passed into 2011 and I’ve been trying to maintain it since... It's hard,” Christian said.

Volunteers from Capitol One planted flowers and installed a new gutter system and handicap sidewalk to accommodate Christian’s mom who is in a wheelchair. Christian said she is grateful for all the help. “It make [makes] me feel blessed. I'm so happy, I’m speechless."

Florence Smith, who has fallen at least twice in her bathroom, had it renovated Saturday so it would be safer. Volunteers installed new tile, counters and guardrails. Several of Smith’s relatives helped out as well, including her granddaughter, Shamika White. "Her herself would still appreciate everybody giving a helping hand, especially for someone who physically can't do it their selves," White said.
