RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -
Thomas Jefferson High School Senior William Hewlett was named a recipient of the Gates Millennium Scholars Program, which was created from a $1 billion grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
The scholarship's goal is to promote academic excellence and provide the opportunity for minority students to reach their potential.
Hewlett was selected from a national pool of students who had the highest grades, leadership skills and community service. Hewlett has a 4.9 weighted grade point average, has been enrolled in the International Baccalaureate program, has performed over 120 hours of community service and is an active member of the National Spanish Honor Society, the National Beta and the school band.
Hewlett plans to attend the University of Maryland College Park in the fall where he will study aerospace engineering.
