RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) - The biggest collegiate bike race in the country hits Richmond this weekend, and more than 400 athletes from more than 100 schools are taking part.

Senior Evan Lang is one of the three VCU students racing at the Cycling Collegiate Road Nationals.

Riders will get a sneak peek at the course for the UCI Road World Championship next year.

"It's super exciting to be able to race here in richmond in my backyard. all of these roads are very familiar to me," said Lang.

The city has been gearing up for the three-day event for months.

"Prior to this week, I'd say 95 % of all the preparations had already been done. By this week it was just a handful of little patch jobs here and there," said Tim Miller, the COO of Richmond 2015.

This week's rain slowed down those last minute jobs, which include replacing a few cobble stones on Libby Hill and fixing areas of Monument Avenue.

In the past week, the city re-paved several roads including large sections of Main Street and parts of Franklin Street.

"It's beautiful now!" said Lang.

He says there is one benefit from the rain.....

"A lot of the roads have been re-paved and there are still a lot of those fresh oils still on there, so hopefully a lot of that slick road surface has been washed away."

Miller says despite the weather this week, everything is right on track, and this will prove Richmond is ready for the 2015 race.

"It's a test for our organization, for the police and for the community at large to prepare for being on the global stage," said Miller.

The Richmond Police Department released this information regarding road closures beginning Thursday night.
