RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -

Streets across the City of Richmond will be shut down to drivers through the weekend for the USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships.

ABC 8News Reporter Tim Wronka was in downtown Richmond on Friday evening. He says that even though time trials have wrapped up, many of the roads remain closed and will remain that way through Sunday evening.

After weeks of worrying about how Friday morning’s commute would go, many workers Wronka spoke with say their trip downtown went just fine.

“No traffic,” said Wendi Wright, who works near the race course. “But I also left early enough, so I didn’t even have to deal with it.”

“People have been very nice,” said volunteer David McMillan. “Most of them understanding and having a good time.”

But that’s just after one day. This race will definitely affect people who live downtown, especially when it comes to parking. GRTC bus routes will also be altered.

“I’m not saying I’m against the racing,” said GRTC passenger Larelle White. “But just think about the other people who have to use alternate transportation or aren’t as fortunate.”

A few neighbors shared their frustration on the ABC 8News Facebook page.

Tiffany Plu said, “I could not even park in the deck adjacent to my building. I had to pay to park and walk several blocks up.”

J.C. Carter said, “I think it is a pain. A lot of the small businesses had to close for the day.”

Like it or not, this event is a trial of sorts for the 2015 UCI Road World Championships, a longer event with more people in town.

“It’s a good practice for next year,” McMillan said. “You’re going to have nine days of this next year.”
