Pastor Theodore Hughey helped organized the vigil at Abundant Life Church.
"I think we sent a serious message that we are rallying to improve the conditions of the community,” he said Sunday morning.
Police say they responded to two altercations in the same area Saturday night.
"I’m a little disturbed over it because I was praying and hoping that because of the vigil it would have given people a mindset that it's not really necessary to commit violence,” said the pastor.
Hughey is standing up as a spokesperson for the community, working on events that will raise awareness about violence.
"So that people in the community know that we are not going to let down or give up after all of the publicity is gone," he said. “I'm going to insist upon city officials understanding that you're not going to forget about us."
Part of that entails having more police patrolling the area.
"We are a forgotten community, and since we are a forgotten community, we need to bring it back to life so that people know we are here. And we are constantly going to be calling upon you even if there is nothing happening."
