The May 5 hearing was closed to media; only the defendant's attorney and family were allowed in the courtroom. The suspect's next hearing date is Monday, May 20 at 2 p.m.
The suspect has been charged with murder and strangulation in connection with the death of 8-year-old Martin “Marty” Cobb and his 12-year-old sister. The suspect’s identity is being withheld because he is a juvenile.
Around 6:30 p.m. on May 1, Richmond Police officers were called to the 200 block of Brandon Road for a report of an assault. They arrived on scene to find two youths under the age of 13 who had been assaulted. Cobb, of the 200 block of Brandon Road, died at the scene. He was allegedly killed trying to protect his sister from the suspect when the suspect threw a rock at his head. The boy died instantly. His sister was taken to the hospital for treatment.
RPD detectives identified and located the suspect within hours of the crime. The juvenile was medically evaluated before being charged with murder and strangulation.
Police were initially given information that the suspect was a white male with scraggly facial hair, but it was later determined that a teenage black male intimidated and threatened the victim.
