What Did Organizers Learn from Bike Race?

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) - As last weekend's bike race ends, organizers are already planning next year's bigger event.

This weekend's Collegiate Road National Championships in Richmond were a test for next year's Road World Championships.

What did organizers learn from the event?

Depending on who you ask, everything either went okay or there were some difficulties.

Manager J.C. Norton at Rockett's Landing restaurant Conch Republic decided the best thing to do was just close for Sunday.

"We're a destination spot," he says. "If you can't get to your destination, it's feasible to close."

Other small businesses closed as well and some residents complained about getting to and from their homes. Richmond police say nearly 270 cars on bike routes were towed over the weekend.

Organizers with Richmond 2015 are now working with police to see what went well and what didn't - especially when it came to road closures.

"There will be some sacrifice from the community," says Richmond 2015's Lee Kallman. "It's not for everyone. But overall, the response we got has been resounding positive."

Even Norton was positive and says ultimately they'd like to find a way to be open next year as other restaurants cashed in on more people in town this weekend.

"As for as the road closures go, obviously it was an obstacle. But it's good to bring that stuff into the community, the city."

And to make things easier for next year, organizers say they hope to make the maps of road closures more clear as well.
