RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -
According to Jim Andelin of the Metro Richmond Zoo, Hanna, one of the five cheetah cubs born at the zoo last year, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, May 4.
The zoo says she was playing and acting normal on Saturday, but on Sunday morning, was found dead by zoo staff in her overnight shelter.
The vet performed an animal autopsy on Hanna and tissue and other samples have been sent to a lab. The zoo is waiting for the results.
Andelin says there was no evidence of trauma or rough play from litter mates and is unrelated to her foot injury she sustained last month. It also does not appear to be anything contagious that would affect the other cubs.
The zoo staff says they are devastated by the loss.
