Richmond Homicide Rate Dramatically Up

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) - After recent tragedies in Richmond, including the death of 8-year-old Marty Cobb and jewelry store clerk Muhammad Baig, we ask police what's being done to stop these senseless crimes.

ABC 8News anchor/reporter Ava-joye Burnett caught up with police as they attended yet another vigil for a young man shot and killed.

A mother is consoled as others deal the best way they know how. The victim - Andre Rhone - was shot and killed in Richmond May 1.

That same day, 8-year-old Marty Cobb was murdered in Richmond.

So far this year, 17 people have been murdered in Richmond - compared to only six at the same time last year.

Out of the 17, Major Drew says the department has closed seven of the homicide cases and some of the rest have pretty strong leads.

Richmond Police say they are patrolling the streets more in cars, walking and on horses. They are also working with faith leaders trying to connect more with the community.

"I do understand the community's concerns when they see the four homicides we've had in the past two weeks," says Major Steve Drew. "The police department is still right here, we're not going anywhere," he says. "So when you talk to the situations that we've had, that's the message that we want to send, that we're still here, still investigating those crimes."

Major Drew says tips are coming in for some of these unsolved cases. If you have any information on these or any crimes, call Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000.
