Sherol Southerland has been roaming the halls in the Henrico County Public School system for years.
"I've wanted to be a teacher since I was in the fifth grade," says Southerland. "I taught my shoes, I taught my dogs, I taught the curtains, whatever would listen."
There were years of teaching and being an assistant principal. Today, Southerland works with students on the brink of dropping out of school.
"I've worked with some of the greatest children you can ever work with," says Southerland. "It's been challenging, but the reward is seeing them walk across the stage."
But Southerland wears multiple hats, and many of them seem to revolve around giving children a brighter future, no matter their age.
Many afternoons after Southerland leaves her full-time job, she heads to a volunteering position at Saint Paul's Church off Belt Boulevard in Richmond.
For almost 40 years, Southerland's sorority, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, has partnered with the March of Dimes for a lifesaving mission. Both organizations have been helping low-income pregnant women provide the basics for their unborn children.
"The look on the mothers' faces as they don't have to worry about how they are going to get some pampers, how they are going to get powder or the basic things they need," says Southerland.
People within the community donate items, and when the donations come in, Southerland hands them out. There are only a few requirements, the women need to be pregnant, or have just had a baby. The woman should also fall below a certain income level.
Items such as clothes, pampers, even bedding are donated. Southerland's goal is that her organization will be able to get a bigger space in the future, so that they can support more women in need.
"The blessing is that we have community members," says Southerland. "A lot of the donations that we have, have come from churches."
