This week, Tim took a trip to Maymont. If you’ve grown up in the Richmond area this is a staple. The sprawling 100-acre estate sits high above the James River providing breathtaking views and stunning scenery.
Maymont is an extraordinary gift that was given to the community by James and Sally May Dooley, who lived here between 1893 and 1925. It was basically their country estate.
There is something at Maymont for everyone to enjoy, whether it’s admiring the pristine gardens, visiting with farm animals or taking a tour of the elegant mansion. Aside from those attractions, Maymont offers various seasonal activities to add even more to your Maymont experience
“We like to celebrate the outdoors at Maymont, we do a lot of community events, whether it be our upcoming Domion Family Easter event, herbs galore, but we also do various concert series, both free and ticketed. Our own stage at Maymont Series, we’re always doing things on the grounds here at Maymont. There’s always family activities here for people to enjoy!”
The Childrens Farm at Maymont is a favorite of the little ones. It features your favorite farm animals such as goats, horses, pigs and even some donkeys, as well as numerous others that are native to Virginia! Parents, this is definitely one to take your children to, they can pet and feed all the animals, and the best part, it’s all free!
Continuing with the nature theme, the zoological center offers an inside look at the natural beauty and habitat of the James river, several exhibits with fish, turtles and river otters are sure to capture the attention of visitors. If that’s not enough, be sure to pay a visit to both the bear and bald eagle exhibits, too.
Hands down, Tim's favorite part of Maymont are the Japanese gardens, which feature a stunning waterfall fed with water pumped in from the Kanawha Canal.
Maymont's grounds are carefully manicured to showcase the beauty of Japanese gardens, a perfect spot to take a seat and just soak in the surroundings. Just a short trip up a path will lead you into the upper Italian gardens which provides the perfect setting for folks to exchange vows and even capture some views of the James River!
If you’ve been to Maymont before and have toured the mansion, you may recognize a swan bed; it belonged to Mrs. Dooley and was a part of their summer home.
The home is packed with priceless art and antiques from around the world. Each room was meant to showcase the vast collections and unmatched wealth accumulated by the Dooleys.
There’s plenty to see and do here at Maymont so load up the family, pack a lunch and come visit!
