HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) - A Henrico woman was sentenced to three years in prison on Tuesday for extorting nearly $200,000 from a Mechanicsville pastor for oral sex.

Tonya Michelle Farnsworth appeared in Hanover County Circuit Court on May 6 and was sentenced to 10 years in prison on a Class 5 felony extortion charge. Seven years of her sentence were suspended. Farnsworth will also be on probation for 30 years.

In December 2012, Chris Allen Phillips, a pastor and former youth minister at Mechanicsville Advent Christian Church, paid 34-year-old Farnsworth $200 for oral sex after responding to an ad on Backpage.com. In January 2013, Farnsworth accused him of stealing $550 from her and threatened to release photos of their sexual encounter if he didn’t pay up.

Farnsworth repeatedly asked Phillips for money; prosecutors say he paid her more than $176,000 over three months. He dropped money off in an SUV parked outside her West End Drive home five to seven days a week through March 2013, according to court documents.

Phillips eventually contacted police about Farnsworth’s demands, and she was located in Tampa, Fla. in April 2013. She claimed her boyfriend was behind the scam and gave her some of the money to purchase pills.

Farnsworth was initially charged with two counts of extortion, but prosecutors dropped one charge in exchange for her guilty plea.

Phillips could face up to 20 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to embezzling more than $87,000 from his church in November 2013, a Class U felony. He used this money, along with roughly $75,000 of his own, to pay Farnsworth. He is expected to be sentenced in June.
