HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -
A history teacher at John Randolph Tucker High School has been charged with assaulting a female student and placed on administrative leave.
According to Henrico County Police Lieutenant Linda Toney, John Jerome Amoroso is accused of assaulting an 18-year-old female student who received abrasions when the two had contact on the track at the school on April 21. The Mechanicsville man’s assault charge is a Class 1 misdemeanor.
“Although we are aware of an incident involving a teacher and another individual at Tucker, we cannot comment both because it is a personnel matter and to protect the individual’s privacy,” said Andy Jenks, the director of communications and public relations for Henrico County Public Schools. “The teacher is on paid administrative leave pending investigation.”
According to Tucker High’s website, Amoroso taught World History & Geography I and AP European History.
?On Twitter, students generally seemed upset about the teacher’s placement on administrative leave.
@__Krist tweeted, “I feel so bad for Mr. Amoroso he’s such a great guy.” @chaseofspades14 tweeted, “Starting a petition to get that girl expelled for pressing charges on Amoroso.” @bekahrose99 tweeted, “I remember when amoroso bought me cookies from the teachers lounge bc I didn’t feel well…I miss him so much.”
On Wednesday night, @KJ_Irving tweeted that “Free Mr. Amoroso” t-shirts in all sizes would be going on sale for $5 at lunch.
Others used social media to show their support for the student involved in the incident.
@Capitalized_H tweeted, “We all love Amoroso but imagine if it was your girl, your sister, or your mom in that situation.”

Amoroso was arraigned on April 29 and is expected to appear in Henrico County General District Court for a hearing at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 11.
